Nutmeg is an important spice tree cultivated in tropical regions. The fruit is oval and yellow when ripe and splits open to reveal a brown seed (nutmeg) covered by a bright red, lacy aril called mace (ஜாதிபத்திரி / Jaadhi Pathiri).

Both nutmeg and mace are highly valued spices used in Indian, Asian, and international cuisines for flavoring sweets, curries, bakery items, and beverages. Nutmeg also has significant importance in Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine for its digestive and aromatic properties.

The nutmeg tree is a medium to large evergreen, preferring warm, humid tropical climates, partial shade in early stages, and well-drained loamy soil. It starts bearing fruits after several years and is prized for its dual spice yield and high market value.
