Kolunchi is a wild, thorny shrub or climber commonly found in dry regions and forest edges of South India. The plant bears small, round fruits that turn dark red to black when ripe. The fruits have a sweet–sour taste and are eaten fresh by rural communities and children.
Kolunchi fruit is traditionally valued in Siddha and folk medicine for its digestive and cooling properties. The plant is drought tolerant and grows well in poor soils with minimal care. It is usually propagated by seeds and is well suited for natural fencing and wasteland cultivation.
